lessons in design
Permeability
Permeability is increased by the shared nature of the streets because people can move through the neighbourhood flexibly without being confined to a separate system of routes.
Variety
Given that people are highly mobile within a permeable street network, they can take advantage of a wide variety of choice.
Legibility
Having an ‘organic’ structure with many distinct forms of enclosure creates natural reference points within the built environment. However, the dense street layout may be confusing to a visitor.
Robustness
Streets offer the opportunity for a range of uses facilitated by cafes, restaurants, and retail outlets on the edges, which create different types and levels of activity at different times of the day.
As the main streets are shared between vehicles and pedestrians there is more scope for different activities. For example, people walking on the road generate demand for temporary market stalls on the side of the street.
