URBAN DESIGN: concepts

Selected the design qualities from 'Responsive Environments' most relevant to the analysis.

Permeability

This is the choice of access through a site, i.e. the greater number of routes through a site increases its permeability. Furthermore, these routes establish basic block boundaries. Permeability is fundamental to creating responsive environments so it should be considered early in the design process.

Variety

This is the choice of experiences, or uses, throughout a site. A place with a variety of uses includes a variety of building types and forms, activities, people, and meanings for those people. How can a variety of uses be maximised based on the demand for those uses and their economic and functional feasibility?

Legibility

This considers how easily people can understand the layout of a site. Legibility takes into account the three-dimensional structure of a place to create different forms of spatial enclosure along routes and at junctions.

Robustness

This focuses on the ability of individual buildings and outdoor spaces to provide the opportunity for more than single fixed uses. The design of a place should offer a wide range of activities and future uses.

Personalisation

This considers the extent to which people are able to make their own mark on their environment. The design of a place should support a certain level of personalisation to reflect the tastes and values of the community.
