Overall, funding from Santander has given me the opportunity to visit Brazil as part of BUDS 2015 (Brazilian Urban Design Study 2015) for a cross-cultural experience, collaborating with students and professors to understand the Brazilian context and share our different approaches to practice.

 

In particular, funding has supported this research project – to understand what aspects of favelas make them good places and compare these to the concepts of good place making we study in the UK. I had the chance to observe and photograph Rocinha favela in Rio, learn about the challenges faced there, and start to develop urban design recommendations to help developers plan suitable neighbourhoods for the resettlement of people living in such places. There is room for further development of this project and to build upon the basic initial recommendations provided.
